About Ellen

I grew up in Dundee and completed the undergraduate LLB and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Glasgow. I joined Balfour+Manson as a trainee solicitor and moved to Edinburgh in August 2017.

During my fourth year at Glasgow University I assumed the role of President of the Glasgow University International Law Society. The society was only in its second year of formation therefore I worked to develop and expand the society’s aims and objectives and create new links with the law school to facilitate the university’s ‘GoGlobal’ program.

Outside of work, I dedicate much of my time to Scottish youth charity ‘The SSC (A Club for the Youth of Scotland)’. I have been involved in the charity since 2008 and in October 2016 I joined the charity’s Management Committee. I also enjoy using my free time to exercise, and I play competitive netball for a club in Edinburgh but my one true love is skiing.

Specialist area

I am now in my final seat at Balfour+Manson, and will qualify in August 2019. I work for Iain Nicol, Partner and Accredited Specialist in Personal Injury Law. I assist Iain with his wide-raging case load pursuing compensation claims for accident victims and those who have suffered as a result of professional or medical negligence, in both the All-Scotland Personal Injury Court and the Court of Session. I have had the opportunity to assist with road traffic, accidents at work, public liability and CICA claims.

My third seat was the start of my time with the Litigation Department. I was working predominately for Partner and Accredited Specialist in Medical Negligence Law, Ann Logan. I assisted Ann with complex medical negligence and catastrophic injury cases, mainly in the Court of Session.

My second seat was with the Family Law Team. I assisted Shona Smith (Partner and Head of Family Law) with a variety of family actions in both the Court of Session and Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

My first six months at Balfour+Manson were spent in the firm’s Private Client department. My daily tasks included drafting Wills, Powers of Attorney, administrating executry estates and assisting with guardianship applications and trusts.
